What is an unattended death?
A death where the person was not found for some period afterward. The term describes the circumstances of discovery, not the cause. Most unattended deaths are entirely natural.
Why is the smell still there after the body has been removed?
The odor is not coming from the body. Decomposition releases compounds that are gaseous at room temperature, and those molecules bond to porous materials throughout the building. They keep releasing odor long after the source is gone, which is why air fresheners do not resolve it.
How far does the contamination reach?
Farther than most people expect. Fluids typically pass through flooring into the subfloor, along subfloor seams and sometimes into the joist cavity and ceiling below. Odor travels through the HVAC system into rooms nowhere near the affected area.
Can any belongings be saved?
Often, yes. Non-porous items and many personal effects can be cleaned and returned. Photographs, documents and jewelry are frequently recoverable. Upholstered furniture and textiles in the immediate area usually are not. Tell us what matters before we begin.
